Is it still very much "go, go, go"? And for those confused about what "going gold" means, can you tell us what it means for 'Age of Conan'? Shannon Drake: I can't say anything about going gold one way or the other, I'm afraid. Stock market thing. Mitra's Method: Not taking the three-day head-start into account, how do you see May 20 panning out in your mind? Paint a picture for us. Shannon Drake: A Picture. But seriously.  While we're ever-hopeful for a completely smooth and pain-free launch day, and will be working tirelessly towards that with the open beta and PVP test and tech/stress tests and general beta (whew!), I don't think any of us is naive enough to think that everything will go completely smoothly and according to plan. However, we've made plans from everything is perfect (this one involves champagne) to real Wrath of God-type stuff (this one, not so much) and will be doing everything possible to keep players informed and happy should things go wrong and even if they go right. Mitra's Method: I understand that the 'Age of Conan' will be dividing up into two teams post-launch: a "live" and an "expansion" team, but focussing on the "expansion" team for a second, can you tell us - or at least elude to - what's on the horizon for 'Age of Conan' in the months after release? Shannon Drake: Let's just say I'd experience what my English ancestors experienced when Vikings came a'raiding if I went downstairs and said "Hey guyz, what's in the expansion?" about now.  Mitra's Method: One of the key features of 'Age of Conan' is its revolutionary real-time combat system, and it's amazing, but I was wondering how important it was for Funcom to pull this off. Gaute Godager spoke about how at the start "it couldn't be done" but how does it feel to have it nailed-down? How do you think this will change MMORPG gaming? Shannon Drake: The thing I've noticed playing other MMOs since I started working on Conan is that I'm a lot less tolerant of classic autoattack+special attack combat systems than I used to be. Even in a game I enjoy, I find myself jabbing forlornly at the movement keys and muttering, "So I can't do anything but stand here flailing away?" It's hard to go back to it once you've gotten used to swinging your weapon yourself, working through combos, and otherwise actively managing your combat. Mitra's Method: What are your own plans for the game? Are you going to roll a character, join a guild, get in on some PvP or sieging, roleplay, that sort of thing? How is it possible for a developer or an 'Age of Conan' team member to enjoy the game as much as others after working on it for so long? Shannon Drake: Well, you do have a point. If you're the guy playing to "win the game," it can be kind of hard to let go, especially since we see it on a day-to-day basis. It's not conducive to the achiever types when "winning" is a matter of logging onto one of our internal servers, scripting your way to victory, and running around the high-end playfields people will take months and months to get to. But at the same time, there really is a lot of fun there, even if you've "won." We were just downstairs testing the PvP client for the Gamespot event and we were acting just like players: talking smack, coordinating, swearing like sailors in front of a journalist, dragging people wandering by in to fill out the team, and really having a good time of it. Another fun part of it is seeing how it all has come together, seeing stuff you haven't seen before, and seeing how much things have improved. Many moons ago, Conan was a default model in his underpants standing in a blank room. Now Conan looks Conan, living in his palace, with courtiers around, scripts and voice effects, emotes, and everything! As for what I'll do, I'll be PvPing and annoying people, much like I was doing when our test this afternoon (as an aside to Nico, Whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on yoooooooooou?). <li>The Argent Tournament Expands

<li>All new Argent Crusader daily quests and rewards have been added for players with the Crusader title. Rewards include a new Argent Crusader banner and tabard (which can port players to the tournament grounds), a mounted squire (can periodically run bank, mail or vendor errands for the player), a paladin-exclusive Argent Crusader Charger mount, and new heirloom items. </li>
<li>All new Silver Covenant and Sunreaver daily quests and rewards have been added for players exalted with these factions. Rewards include tabards, new ground and flying mounts, and a new pet. </li>
<li>Just when you thought you had seen the last of the Black Knight, he makes his astonishing return to the tournament. Wait, didn't you kill him? </li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>New druid art for cat and bear forms has been added. There are now five unique color schemes for each form and faction. Changing hair color (night elves) or skin tone (tauren) via the barbershop will change the look of one's cat and bear forms. </li>
<li>Copied Test Realm characters will no longer be copied with their achievement history in order to better facilitate the character copy process. </li>
</ul>
<p><strong>PvP</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Arenas 
<ul>
<li>The newest season of Arena gear can only be purchased if you meet the requirements with your 3 or 5-player team rating. Rating requirements from 2-player teams can still be used to purchase the previous season of gear. </li>
<li>Dalaran Sewers 
<ul>
<li>The entire Arena has increased in size by 25%. </li>
<li>Mounts can now be used in this Arena. </li>
<li>The position and collision of the crates on the central platform has been modified. </li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Ruins of Lordaeron 
<ul>
<li>Alcoves have been removed from the starting chambers. </li>
<li>Two line-of-sight tombstones have been added to the slime pool on the southern side of the map. </li>
<li>The collision around the central tomb has been smoothed out to prevent players from becoming stuck on the terrain as often. </li>
</ul>

<li>Battlegrounds 
<ul>
<li>Battleground experience has arrived! 
<ul>
<li>Players will now be awarded experience for completing objectives and actions that yield honor in Battlegrounds (honorable kills not included). </li>
<li>Players who do not wish to gain experience through PvP can visit Behsten in Stormwind or Slahtz in Orgrimmar - both located near the Battlemasters in either city - and turn off all experience accumulation for the cost of 10 gold. </li>
<li>Disabling experience gains will prevent a player from gaining experience through any means available in the game. </li>
<li>Players with experience gains turned off who compete in Battlegrounds will face off only against other players with experience gains turned off. </li>
<li>Behsten and Slahtz can reinstate experience gains for players, for a 10 gold fee of course. Any experience that would've been accumulated if experience gains were enabled cannot be recovered. </li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Battlemasters in major cities affiliated with specific Battlegrounds have been replaced with a Battlemaster for each faction that will allow players to queue for any Battleground. Battlemasters for specific Battlegrounds will still be seen around the cities during corresponding Battleground holiday weekends. </li>
<li>When standing at a capture point that you control, you will gain a buff called Honorable Defender. This buff grants +50% honor gained from kills. This currently affects Arathi Basin, Eye of the Storm and Isle of Conquest. </li>
<li>Arathi Basin 
<ul>
<li>The time it requires to capture a base has been reduced to 8 seconds, down from 10 seconds. </li>
<li>The game now ends when one team reaches 1600 victory points, down from 2000. </li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Eye of the Storm 
<ul>
<li>The time it requires to capture the center flag has been reduced to 8 seconds, down from 10 seconds </li>
<li>The game now ends when one team reaches 1600 victory points, down from 2000. </li>

<li>Strand of the Ancients 
<ul>
<li>The faction starting on attack/defense will now be randomized at the start of each match. </li>

<li>There is a now a 20-minute timer on this Battleground. After that time, the team with the most flag captures wins. If this would result in a tie, the team that captured the first flag wins. If neither side has captured a flag, then the game ends in a tie. </li>

<li>Wintergrasp 
<ul>
<li>To provide players with a more transparent notification of when Wintergrasp battles occur, as well as better control zone population and stability, several changes have been made. 
<ul>
<li>Players now have the option to queue for Wintergrasp from a Wintergrasp Battlemaster in any capital city or by simply entering the Wintergrasp zone. </li>
<li>Queuing will begin 15 minutes before each battle. If chosen, you will automatically be teleported to the zone. Any players in the zone who have not been chosen from the queue will be teleported out when the battle begins. </li>
<li>The queue system remains active for the entire battle. As soon as a player leaves, a new one will be chosen from the queue. </li>
<li>Trying to enter Wintergrasp during an active battle for which you have not been chosen will teleport you out. Please note that, as you are now able to fly over Wintergrasp, you will only be teleported out if you try to land and join the battle. </li>
<li>Level 80 players get higher priority in the queue than lower level players. In addition, a random selection of queued players will be taken from both the Battlemasters and the zone itself. </li>
<li>The queue will accept up to 100 players from each faction, resulting in a maximum battle of 200 players at a time. </li>

<p><strong>Races: General</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Axe Specialization (Orc): The weapon bonus from this effect now applies to fist weapons in addition to axes. </li>
<li>Tauren now have the option of changing skin tone by visiting the barber shop. </li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Items: General</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Block Value: The amount of bonus block value on all items has been doubled. This does not affect the base block value on shields or block value derived from strength. </li>
<li>On-Use Block Value Items: All items and set bonuses that trigger temporary increases to block value have been modified. Instead of increasing their block value amount by 100% like other items, they have all had their effect durations doubled. This applies to Glyph of Deflection, Gnomeregan Autoblocker, Coren's Lucky Coin, Lavanthor's Talisman, Libram of Obstruction, Tome of the Lightbringer, Libram of the Sacred Shield, the tier-8 paladin Shield of Righteousness bonus, the tier-5 paladin Holy Shield bonus, and the tier-5 warrior Shield Block bonus. </li>
<li>Emblem System Changes 
<ul>
<li>Both the 10 and 25-player instances of the Crusaders' Coliseum drop a new Emblem of Triumph. </li>
<li>Any dungeons that previously dropped Emblems of Heroism or Valor, such as Naxxramas or Heroic Halls of Stone, will now drop Emblems of Conquest instead. Emblems of Conquest can still be converted to Valor or Heroism. </li>
<li>The Heroic dungeon daily quest will now reward 2 Emblems of Triumph and the normal daily dungeon quest will reward 1 Emblem of Triumph. </li>

<li>Item Buy Back Feature Revised

<li>Mounts

<li>The cast time for summoning any ground mount is now 1.5 seconds, down from 3 seconds. </li>
<li>Apprentice Riding (Skill 75): Can now be learned at level 20 for 4 gold. Mail will be sent to players who reach level 20 directing them to the riding trainer. </li>
<li>Journeyman Riding (Skill 150): Can now be learned at level 40 for 50 gold. Mail will be sent to players who reach level 40 directing them back to the riding trainer. </li>

<li>In order to further equalize the number of purchasable mounts available to each race, a new 60% speed ground mount has been added for night elves, and a new 100% speed ground mount has been added for the undead. </li>
<li>Flying over Dalaran and Wintergrasp is now possible so long as players keep a healthy distance above the ground. </li>

<li>New Dungeon Loot Feature 
<ul>
<li>Players will now be able to trade soulbound items with other raid or group members that were eligible for the loot. This system will work like the Item Buy Back system and allow 2 hours for players to trade an item after it has been looted. Players who choose to enchant or add gems to the item will get one last confirmation before losing the ability to trade the item. </li>

<li>Mana Regeneration: All items that provide "X mana per five seconds" have had the amount of mana they regenerate increased by approximately 25%. </li>
<li>Resilience: No longer reduces the amount of damage done by damage-over-time spells, but instead reduces the amount of all damage done by players by the same proportion. The other effects of resilience (reducing critical chance, critical damage and mana drain effects) have not changed. </li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Classes: General</strong></p>

<li>All pets now receive 40% of their master's resilience and 100% of their master's spell penetration. In addition, if a player is at their appropriate spell hit chance or hit chance maximum, their pet will be at the maximum for spell hit chance, hit chance, and expertise. If they are below the maximum, their pet will be proportionately below those maximums. </li>
<li>Replenishment: This buff now grants 1% of the target's maximum mana over 5 seconds instead of 0.25% per second. This applies to all 5 sources of Replenishment (Vampiric Touch, Judgements of the Wise, Hunting Party, Enduring Winter Frostbolts and Soul Leech). </li>
<li>Silence, Strangulate, Silencing Shot, and Arcane Torrent: These abilities will also apply a 3-second interrupt effect against non-player controlled targets, making them more versatile against creatures immune to silencing effects. </li>

<p><strong>Death Knights</strong></p>

<li>Due to significant talent changes, all death knight talents will be reset for players. </li>
<li>Blood Plague: Damage done increased by 15%. </li>
<li>Blood Strike: The bonus damage this ability receives from diseases on the target has been increased to 25% per disease. </li>
<li>Chains of Ice: Now reduces movement by 95% instead of 100%. The main effect of this change will be that targets of Chains of Ice will not have to re-issue a movement command to continue moving. </li>
<li>Frost Fever: Damage done increased by 15%. </li>
<li>Frost Presence: 10% bonus health reduced to 6% bonus stamina. </li>
<li>Frost Strike: This ability can now be dodged, parried, or blocked. Weapon damage bonus reduced to 55%, down from 60%. </li>

<li>Threat of Thassarian: New 3-point talent. When dual-wielding, your Death Strikes, Obliterates, Plague Strikes, Blood Strikes and Frost Strikes have a 30/60/100% chance to also deal damage with your off-hand weapon. Off-hand strikes are roughly one half the effect of the original strike. </li>

<li>Desolation: New talent. This talent is in the position formerly occupied by Desecration. It causes Blood Strikes to increase all damage the death knight deals by 1/2/3/4/5% for 12 seconds. </li>

<li>Summon Gargoyle: The gargoyle now flies lower to the ground, making it susceptible to melee attacks. This ability now has a fixed duration of 30 seconds and a fixed cost of 60 runic power. </li>

<li>Righteous Fury: No longer has a duration, remaining until cancelled or death. Also cancelled when a Paladin activates a different talent specialization. </li>
<li>Sacred Shield: When a paladin casts Flash of Light on a target with this buff, they also now place a heal-over-time effect on the target, healing that target for 100% of the Flash of Light amount over 12 seconds. </li>

<li>Seal of Vengeance and Seal of Corruption: These seals have been redesigned to deal substantially more damage. Now, once a paladin has 5 copies of the debuff from these seals on his or her target, on each swing the paladin will deal 33% weapon damage as Holy, with critical strikes dealing double damage. In addition, the damage-over-time effect is now considered a melee attack instead of a spell attack. </li>

These changes are a long time coming for those of the Engineering profession, and many folks will be quite pleased by them. There are 19 total changes that Zarhym announced ? that's quite a lot for any patch.<br /><br />Some of the ones that stand out include:</p>

<p>It's been in the works for some time now, and been put through its paces on the test servers for a few months now. It is certainly more than a little nerve wracking to see an update that has had so much effort and dedication poured into it released to the live servers.</p>
<p>It is also likely that there are some elements we will still need to tweak and adjust further, and we are prepared and ready for that. The test server cycle has been great, and I'd like to extend my thanks to everyone who has put time into testing the update and providing their feedback. We couldn't have done this without you.</p>

<p><strong>Getting to grips with the Update</strong></p>
<p>Things are a little different with the revamped RPG system, you will have to experience and learn the new feat trees, you will have to experiment a little to find the new builds that work best for you. Every class and play-style has new aspects to consider and we expect that it will take a few days or weeks for people to fully explore the new possibilities.</p>
<p>So the sub-requirement of a little patience also comes with exploring the changes and seeing what works best with the new system. It won't be that everything that worked well with the old system is the best solution with the new changes.</p>
<p>I think the building blocks are now there for moving the game forward. The ambition of this update has always been for the changes to the system to allow us to create better and more meaningful skills, abilities and equipment in the future. I think the changes do achieve this goal, but the deployment of these changes to the live servers, really mark a beginning to this development, not the end. These are the tools that will allow us to take the game forward.</p>
<p>You will continue to see changes and additions to class and item balance as we move forward. Just as there are aspects of the new systems that players will have to get familiar with I am sure there will be elements that the developers have to adjust for and add to as we move forward.</p>
<p>This is an exciting 'stepping stone' for the game as it were, that opens up a host of new options for us to craft even better and more meaningful content for you all in the future. It's a challenge we are very much looking forward to!</p>

		<title>Age of Conan Update 5: Gangs of Tarantia Revealed</title>

			<p>Well, in this exclusive developer journal, Funcom's Age of Conan team fills us in on some of the finer details of the upcoming Update 5: <strong><a href="http://www.gamevive.com/gamevive/mmorpg_news/1421.html">Gangs of Tarantia</a></strong> and the changes that it will bring to the game.</p>
<p><strong><em>"Gangs of Tarantia", the fifth major update for Age of Conan, is the biggest and most influential update done to the game since launch. Let's take a look at why.</em></strong></p>
<p>Not only does <strong><a href="http://www.gamevive.com/gamevive/mmorpg_news/1421.html">AoC Update 5</a></strong> add several hours worth of new content thanks to the new game region, it also makes fundamental changes to the core systems of the game that will make gameplay even more fun, exciting, and rewarding. These changes significantly improve how the plays and the rewards available for game-play. This update has been designed to deal with the remaining significant issues both players and developers alike had identified with the game at launch.</p>
<p><strong>Tarantia Commons</strong></p>
<p>The city of Tarantia, from where King Conan himself rules Aquilonia, is a grand bastion of human civilization and culture. Yet the urban underbelly of King Conan's capital city is rife with social unrest, unscrupulous characters, poverty and villainy...a perfect place for discovering new adventures! Tarantia Commons can now be visited by high level players (level 75 and up) seeking new and exciting experiences.</p>

<p>Complete with new quests, new instanced encounters, great new boss fights and dynamic social events Tarantia Commons awaits those brave enough to try and make a name for themselves on its unforgiving streets! We have put a tremendous amount of effort into the storyline in this area, and a myriad of new quests will bring players into a drama unlike anything seen before in Age of Conan. Central to the gameplay are three rival gangs going at each other, and players will actually be able to support one of the gangs by completing quests for them and earning their trust over time.</p>
<p>Gang warfare is prevalent in <strong><a href="http://www.gamevive.com/gamevive/mmorpg_news/1421.html">Tarantia Commons</a></strong>. You will see gangs fighting in the streets and you will be able to join the battles. Riots are also frequent in Tarantia Commons, and as a player you will be able to affect the outcome of these riots and even recruit more men to join through quests. Tarantia Commons is about quality storyline, and players have an opportunity to directly affect the conflict going on in the area.</p>
<p>We have also put a lot of effort into implementing gameplay that feels different and new from an MMO perspective. For instance you will soon find out that a lot of the action takes place on the rooftops in Tarantia Commons. You can climb onto the roofs, and a whole new world of gameplay opens up. Another example is the leper colony - go there and you run the risk of being infected by the disease, acquiring a horrible debuff!</p>
<p><strong>Item and RPG system update</strong></p>
<p>One of the biggest improvements in <strong>AoC Update 5</strong> is what we've done to the items and core system mechanics within the game. Previously item statistics - how much damage a sword would do, how much protection armor would do - was hard to decipher and it was hard to understand what sort of impact the item would have on your character's powers. And often, items didn't really have a lot of impact on your character's powers at all.</p>
<p>This is changing significantly with Update 5. Items now have statistics that are easier to understand and that are more similar to what you find in similar MMO games. You will immediately understand what sort of impact they will have on your character, and equipment now has a significant effect on your character's powers and ability to deal damage and take damage.</p>

<p>With items being more important, questing and raiding will turn out to be a lot more rewarding than before. The quest for cool loot has always been an important feature to MMO gameplay, and with this update it will play an even bigger role in Age of Conan. Hopefully it will make it a lot more exciting to obtain new weapons and armor, and this will also hopefully have a positive effect on the activity levels in trade between players!</p>
<p><strong>Social pets, city life, and more! </strong></p>
<p>The above is definitely the biggest part of this update, but there is a lot more to discover as well. For instance we have now made it so that PvP (player vs. player) mini-games provide PvP experience, making mini-games more viable as a way to obtain higher PvP ranks. As always, going up in PvP ranks will give you benefits such as new armor and weapons that "common" people just can't get their hands on!</p>
<p>In Age of Conan player guilds can create their own cities. They can claim a piece of land and start building walls, barracks, temples, and a wide array of other buildings that provide benefits to the guild. With <strong><a href="http://www.gamevive.com/gamevive/mmorpg_news/1421.html">AoC Update 5</a></strong> we have added much more city life to player cities. As your city grows, its population becomes more dense and varied. Guards patrol the streets and merchants offer their wares. As your tradepost expands, more merchants will move into it making your city an increasingly hotter destination. We've also introduced a new ability that allows players to teleport to their guild city instantly!</p>
<p>We have also added new social pets to the game. Players can purchase these social pets from vendors in the guild cities, and currently the selection is cats, dogs and snakes. Social pets can not fight for you - but hey, they look pretty cool following you!</p>
<p>Last, but certainly not least, we have made a complete overhaul of the gems system in the game. Gems are an important aspect of crafting within Age of Conan, that players can use to incorporate different type of gems into items to make them more potent. The details are a bit too complicated to cover here, but using gems is now a lot more streamlined and crafters will see their services in higher demand than before!</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p>
<p>The team is very proud to finally have Update 5 hit the live servers, but we all know that there is still work to be done. We will continue to tweak and improve on all the changes and additions made in <strong>AoC Update 5</strong>, largely based on the feedback we get from our players. So what's next for Age of Conan? It's a bit too early to say just yet, but we've already started working on the next update. And let me tell you... guilds will be pleased!</p>

		<title>Aion Preview: Aion First Look</title>

			<p><strong><a href="http://www.gmbar.com/mmorpg-1347.html">Aion First Look</a></strong> is here, let's take a preview at Aion Online now. Sanya Weathers takes advantage of the recent <a href="http://www.gmbar.com/mmorpg-1345.html">NDA drop</a> to tell readers about her experiences with the highly anticipated MMO from NCSoft.</p>
<p>If you take away one thing from this <strong>first look at Aion</strong>, I hope it's this: Do not do what I did, and switch between Free Realms and Aion in the same playing session. Your brain will explode. But I'll get to that in a minute.</p>

<p>Aion is big in the Far East. Really big. A localized, Westernized version is coming to North America this year. The development team behind the game is so confident they've got a hit on their hands that they allowed people to post screenshots from the beta event two weeks ago, and the <a href="http://www.gmbar.com/mmorpg-1345.html">NDA officially lifted on June 16th</a>.</p>
<p>So what's it like?</p>
<p>There is an unholy degree of character customization. For my female warrior, I had 44 hairstyles, 20 faces, and six bodies. There were 23 "premade" face/hair combinations. There were tattoo options. And there were 25 face sliders to customize everything from eyebrows to nose tilt. And there will apparently be voice options as well, although they were not functional while I was testing. There are also body sliders. Some people pushed those sliders aaaaaaaaall the way to the right, predictably.</p>

<p>When you've finished creating your character, and you choose the avatar to be played from the character group on the beach, your little simulacrum is extremely excited to be chosen.</p>
<p>It is fantastically gorgeous, with thousands of little details to gorge on. The landscapes are sweeping and epic. The animations look like they were done with motion capture, and within a few feet of the opening spawn point, you're sure to find people testing their new emotes.</p>
<p>There's much more variance in terms of the differences between male animations and female animations. Even at level one, combat animations are flashy and dramatic.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>On top of all this, the spawn rate during the beta event was jacked to eleven, with millions of two legged rat things and thousands of armadillo things waiting to die. I logged in for the first time within an hour of the floodgates opening. Should have been a slideshow, right?</p>
<p>My machine is a dual core Dell (1.86 Ghz), ,,P, with two GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS. As I've said elsewhere, it's two years old, and loaded up with every MMO in existence, half a dozen RPGs, and a crapload of my secret vice, puzzle adventures. While I was playing Aion, I had my email and IM running, as well as an image editing program open to crop screenshots on the fly. I did not attempt to play Aion on the road, so I only experienced the game on a Fios connection.</p>
<p>If it hadn't been for all the people, I might have thought I was playing a single player game. I never had the slightest delay at any point, doing anything, over the course of several days. I cannot name a single MMO in my experience where that was true at launch, let alone beta!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The sound was phenomenal. It was gorgeous, lush, and did a lot to create mood. It never sounded repetitive at all.</p>
<p>While I did not get to experience either flight or fighting other people in my three day journey of discovery, I found plenty of evidence that neither is an afterthought. Anyone following this title for any length of time already knew that, but if you're just now catching on to Aion: Koreans do not do PvP as an afterthought. The Asian market expects it to be an integral part of the game. The game is therefore not balanced by testing the PvE, and then tested for PvP at the last minute.</p>
<p>When you first log in, you're invulnerable. After you finish a fight, you remain in combat mode for several of the longest seconds of your life. These are the most basic anti-exploit mechanisms possible, and you would be stunned at how many PvP betas I've encountered without them. Or maybe you wouldn't be. Anyway, it's not just that:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The interface has elements you can mouseover to see if someone's in range, even flying people. The layout and location demonstrate that aerial combat is something the game was built around, as opposed to added into the game to sell a few extra copies.</p>
<p>Questing was both a disappointment and a wonder. Here is where I warn future Aion players to not even look at Free Realms. I was finishing up my FR review when the Aion event started, so I played both titles in the same hour. I swear that FR made me stupid. I kept looking for the green dots to lead me to each objective, I couldn't find simple objects because they weren't sparkling like a rapper's front teeth, and I felt vaguely let down that killing a rat wasn't a cause for fanfare, celebration, and text messages assuring me of my greatness. Instead, NPCs were openly insulting me, accusing me of sleeping on the job, of having no honor, of not caring about anyone but myself.</p>
<p>I got over it, mind you, but the disorientation persisted for a few minutes. The insult routine is a little odd, from a Western point of view, but it's stemming from a cultural ideal where newcomers must prove themselves. Respect is earned, not granted. Just relax and level up; the peasants will respect you by level five.</p>
<p>It's definitely not a Western MMO, even with all the cultural localization they've been doing. (That localization is not complete, or was not as of mid-June. Some of it is just funny - "We will not let you wretches to take the goal!" - and some of it's annoying, such as when the Korean word for a particular object could be either of several English words, and the NPC uses both in a single line of dialogue.) It's hard to put a finger on what makes it foreign, beyond the obvious stuff like the heckling. And the obvious stuff like the talking ferret. What is it with Asian games and talking furballs?</p>
<p>Anyway. Quests. The interface is marvelous. They don't load up your quest journal with tons of data you may not need, but all the nouns can be clicked to feed you more information:</p>

<p>There's a great waypoint system as well, where your destination of choice appears as a purple X, and as an arrow on the minimap.</p>

<p>The first few levels of quests, sadly, were mediocre at best. The standard "save the farm, kill the rats" material. When you're done, you are solemnly thanked for solving a problem that clearly still exists. I should have taken a screenshot of the farmer thanking me for solving his armadillo infestation as one respawned directly under his pitchfork.</p>
<p>There's no attempt at even hinting at the backstory (big apocalyptic event, sundered the world, erased your memory - got that from Google!), except that a few NPCs mention that you've lost your memory. The early quests don't do anything to set up the situation, or to even create a vague sense of curiosity over what's happened to you and your world. If you have played as many MMOs as I have, you are going to spend the first hour or two with a sense of "oh, god, not this again," and you will be strongly tempted to go back to the world where you already did these levels.</p>
<p>Do not make this mistake.</p>

<p>I finally completed this one quest, you see, as an ordinary earthbound warrior. The talking tree snapped me to a cutscene. It was a "recovered" memory, and it was wonderfully done. The environment, the music, the dialogue, it all worked together to create a sense of mood and expectation. Before I could over think it too much, my character suddenly ran to the edge of a cliff and jumped. The sense of falling was rendered so well that my physical stomach lurched a little.</p>
<p>And then my angel wings snapped open, and I could fly. And kill.</p>
<p>I haven't wanted to play an MMO until dawn in years, but I almost did that night. That quest marked a real turning point in the game. Many of the quests I got after that were better written, and the ones that weren't, well, I didn't mind so much. There was a new feeling to the game, like there was something I was working toward.</p>

		<title>Silkroad Online: Fortress Wars Guide</title>

<p>The <strong>Fortress War expansion</strong> has been out for over a year, yet I know that how exactly a successful takeover works is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to the transfer of control from one guild to another. <strong><a href="http://www.gmbar.com/mmorpg-1344.html">Silkroad Fortress War</a></strong> is one of my favorite features, despite the awkward time, because how can you go wrong with two hours of straight group PvP? So bring your love of bashing the opposition, 'cause there are a lot of steps to go through between signing up to fight and being the holder of the fortress.</p>
<p><strong>Preparations:</strong></p>
<p>First, you need to get prepared. Signing up at the fortress administrator in Jangan is merely the beginning. You will need to buy a few supplies and organize your guild as well. Make sure you give fortress positions to people who are going to be there. If you gain control of the fortress, you will need those people to be able to function in order to be able to defend what you have just gained. Also, if you gain the fortress, it can be taken back if there is enough time before the end of the war, so you will need defensive items such as pills, barriers, bombs and repair hammers in addition to a command post. All of these are available at the fortress NPC in Jangan. Buy many stacks of barriers and repair hammers and give them to those who can use them. Buy some Man-hos (White Tigers) also because they are good for defending your command post from low level hammerers trying to destroy it. Every guild leader in your union can use them.</p>
<p>Make a plan. Have everyone get partied up and meeting in the same places. Make sure every single one of the guild leaders in your union has a command post and some Man-hos. The teleports open promptly at 19:00 hours Silkroad Standard Time and lasts for two hours. For me on the West Coast, that is 3 AM so there are a lot of people that will not be able to make it from both the US and Europe. Make certain that the people who are there are the one's that have <strong><a href="http://www.gmbar.com/mmorpg-1344.html">Silkroad Fortress War</a></strong> positions. You don't want to be the guild that holds the fortress for 10 minutes because you weren't organized enough to keep it! You only have 15 hammerers per guild so make SURE those are the people who are there and ready to get to work.</p>
<p>Once the teleports become active at 19:00 hours your first order of business is to set up your Command Post. Make sure you keep your union together. Even if you are friendly with other attacking unions, accidentally killing one of them because your Command Posts are right together can completely destroy a good plan with infighting. Your Command Post is your spawn point, so if you have a plan where you are attacking a certain gate, get as close to that gate with your Command Post ad you can. The defending union probably will still be inside their fortress, so you won't need to set up a Man-ho right away. Once your Command Post starts getting attacked, it flashes on the map. Send a small band of non-hammerers with a high level guild leader to route them out and set a Man-ho to defend it.</p>
<p><strong>Gates:</strong></p>
<p>The most successful strategy is to set up a semi high level group of hammerers with high levels and low levels with knock back and knock down behind them to defend. You can see the health of the gates if you click on them. The defenders can repair so even if it looks like you are making headway, don't lose hope if you notice that the gate gets healed. Only five players can repair a gate and they are spread out over three gates at Jangan Fort and two for Bandit Den Fort. They can also be interrupted though there is no outside indication that they are repairing. You may encounter barriers at the east and west side entrances of the Jangan Fort but they are low HP deterrents and shouldn't slow you down much. One very successful strategy for defenders is to just open the gates when they get low because once a gate breaks it is broken forever. There isn't much you can do to counter this. Try to stay organized and get as many people in that gate as you can before they shut and repair it to weaken them from the inside. Do not let your people run to the heart yet, there is much to do before you go near it.</p>
<p><strong>Towers:</strong></p>
<p>Once you are inside, there are towers to destroy. There may be barriers up but your hammerers should make short work of these. Only destroy the ones you must to get to the towers. Make sure you are attacking the correct ones! You can attack the buff towers also but these aren't that important, so don't bother. The towers that are located to the right, left and center around the Gate of Resurrection for Jangan Fort and at the Southwest and Northeast corners for the Bandit Den Fort are the correct ones. The defenders can make attacking these very difficult. Not only can they put barriers around them all, but the towers themselves attack you with fire, ice, lightning and darkness depending on what kind the defenders have set up. They can also be repaired like the gate so use lots of splash attacks to interrupt repairing.</p>
<p>Like the gates, once the towers are destroyed, they are destroyed for good and cannot be resurrected by the defenders. Take your time killing them unless it is close to the end of the war time. You want to be at the heart in the last 15 minutes or so of the war to prevent anyone else taking the fort or retaking it from you.</p>
<p><strong>Heart:</strong></p>
<p>Once all three towers are destroyed, its time to head for the heart. There will be barriers around it more than likely. Only destroy those needed to reach the center. Try to attack from the same side of a destroyed gate if at all possible to make rushes more efficient if your party gets wiped out. This is where having an intact Command Post becomes very convenient. The Center has a very strong attack. Of course it goes by levels (<a href="http://silkroadwiki.com/wiki/Fortress_War#Fortress_Heart">Click here</a> to see the various damages it can inflict) of defense and damage but it has high freeze and frostbite probability. This is where those pills are so important. The heart can also be repaired so make sure you again use lots of splash attacks to interrupt potential repairers. Bring everything you got here but my advise would be to time the destruction of the heart as close to the end of the war as you can.</p>
<p><strong>SUCCESS!</strong></p>
<p>So you have destroyed the heart. Now for the tricky part. Everyone but the guild that did the most damage will be teleported out of the fortress war area. This is where strong ties with your allies are very important. All the gates, towers and heart go to level 1 and are whole again. You have to defend them from the previous owners and hopefully your allies are going to help you. The Fortress gives you a 5 minute grace period. Use this to put up barriers around the inside of the fortress. They are good for slowing people down and if you timed your attack correctly, the opposition wont have much time to get the fort back before the time runs out. Once <strong><a href="http://www.gmbar.com/mmorpg-1344.html">Silkroad Fortress War</a></strong> ends, whomever is in control wins. You can also repair the gates if you granted your fortress war positions and gave out the proper items. If you lose the heart to another union, they will also have the same 5 minute grace period and if you run out of time getting back to the center to retake it, it's a good way to run out of time and lose the fortress to an opportunistic guild.</p>
<p>On the Saturday following the war, you can withdraw the tax money that had built up over the previous two weeks. You can also change the tax % to whatever you wish at that time. There is a bug currently that causes the gold to go negative and make it impossible to withdraw but don't worry, just leave it in and the following war you will b e able to withdraw the total amount when it rebuilds again. Don't forget to upgrade your gates and towers after each week to better defend them!</p>
<p>In conclusion, the PvP is worth it. There is no other way in Silkroad Online to get such hardcore, intense fighting for two hours straight. Due to the sheer number of folks involved, it can be the most crazy PvP, dwarfing any guild war you could set up because there is no safe zone, no backing down. Win or lose, its fun!</p>

<p><strong>Armor</strong></p>
<p>Armor represents the amount by which what you are wearing protects you. Seems simple? It is. If you are a career that only has access to light robes, this stat will be a lot lower than a career that has access to heavy armor. In the game Armor has the following effect:</p>

<li>Reduces physical damage taken. </li>
</ol>
<p>Physical damage in this case counts as any physical or melee damage you take. The amount by which armor reduces damage is based on your armor stat.</p>

For example a Marauder hits you with auto-attack. It is a melee attack, so it receives a damage bonus from the Marauder's strength statistic. Your toughness reduces the amount of bonus damage generated by the Maruader's strength, but not the base damage of the weapon he hit you with. Once all of the mathematics of the attack have been worked out, the last thing applied is damage reduction from armor. Ever look at the combat log and see a line that looks something like this:</p>
<p>Your attack hits Marauder for 387 damage (69 mitigated).,</p>
<p>That 69 damage that your opponent has avoided was mitigated by his armor statistic. His toughness was applied first and reduced the total damage of your attack, then his armor subtracted from the total.</p>
<p>A lot of the game's players suspect that armor based damage reduction is capped at 75%. It is also worth noting that, while this is the only stat that is consistently affected by pieces of armor, these equipment parts are items and your armor could very easily provide bonuses for other stats as well.</p>
<p><strong>Corporeal Resistance</strong></p>
<p>"How does corporeal resistance differ from armor and toughness?" is a question I hear my guild members ask a lot. That and "how does armor differ from toughness?", which we just covered. Corporeal resistance actually has very little to do with corporeal things like having your nose chewed off by a squig or getting a crossbow bolt through an eye. Corporeal resistance actually affects abilities used against you that have a basis in what Mythic has defined as the "corporeal". In game it has the following effect:</p>
<ol>
<li>Reduces corporeal damage. </li>
</ol>
<p>The damage reduction, simply put, is worked out using your resistance stat divided by roughly half of your opponent's career rank. If you have ever wondered; how does one figure out which abilities are affected by corporeal resistance and which are not? Well the answer's not an easy one but I'll try and set you on the right path. The following are examples of abilities affected by corporeal resistance:</p>

<li>Black Orc - WAAAAAAARGH! </li>
<li>Zealot - Scourge </li>
<li>Squig Herder - Poison Arrer </li>
<li>Sorceress - Doombolt </li>
<li>Engineer - Firebomb </li>
<li>Bright Wizard - Scorched Earth </li>
<li>Shadow Warrior - Festering Arrow </li>
</ol>
<p>Note this is just a selection of example abilities. Some buffs even add corporeal damage to attacks, for example, the Bright Wizard's Flames of Rhuin or Sorceress' Daemonic Chill. Essentially Corporeal abilities are ones that, once cast, affect your character physically; fire, ice, poison, face-melting chaos magic. It is difficult to classify especially as ice and fire seem like they should be elemental attacks. Why are Firebomb and Scorched Earth corporeal while Fireball and Rune of Fire are elemental? It comes down to balancing the mechanics of the game rather than logic and is just something you must learn.</p>
<p><strong>Spiritual Resistance</strong></p>
<p>Spiritual resistance works in much the same way as corporeal resistance,but don't get them confused. Where corporeal damage represents physical damage caused by magic, spiritual damage harms your immortal soul! But that is about it in terms of subtleties. In essence:</p>
<ol>
<li>Reduces spiritual damage. </li>
</ol>
<p>It does this in the exact same way as corporeal resistance. The careers that specialize in spiritual damage are the Archmage, Magus and Sorceress. The Chosen and Swordmaster also have their fair share of spiritual abilities.</p>
<p><strong>Elemental Resistance</strong></p>
<p>This is a special notice to all Destruction players; do you ever wonder where all those hit-points went? I'll tell you. They were seared away by that Bright Wizard because you felt that elemental resistance was a dump stat. It is not. It is a very esoteric stat, but, before I explain myself, I just want to say that elemental resistance has the following in-game effect:</p>
<ol>
<li>Reduces elemental damage. </li>
</ol>
<p>There are two classes on each side that specialize in elemental damage. For Order; Rune Priest and Bright Wizard, for Destruction: Shaman and Magus. Seeing as the Rune Priest has essentially negligible damage you must ask yourself: How bad is the Bright Wizard infestation on your server? As for Order players, well a Shaman that knows what he is doing can certainly outstrip a Rune Priest in terms of DPS (at least pre patch 1.3) and Magus' are obviously DPS based so any damage reduction against them is a good thing.</p>
<p>At early levels, you will find items tend to have bonuses for all three resistances if they have bonuses at all. Later, you will find that one of the resistances has a higher bonus than the others and toward the end of the game items have seemingly arbitrary resistance bonuses. In the end it comes down to your play style and what classes you feel present the most threat to your character.</p>
<p><strong>Block</strong></p>
<p>Block is a stat that is married to shields. Only careers that are of the Tank archetype can use shields. So Tanks, pay attention; no shield means no block. Block is activated against any offensive ability be it magical, physical or ranged physical in origin. The effect is:</p>
<ol>
<li>Provides a chance to completely nullify any incoming attack. </li>
</ol>
<p>This chance is worked out as a percentage by the block rating of your shield divided by your opponent's career rank.</p>
<p><strong>Parry, Dodge and Disrupt</strong></p>

<p>These three stats, much like the three resistance stats share a common purpose. They are all the same except they protect against different types of attack.</p>

<li>Dodge: Chance to completely deflect an incoming physical ranged attack. </li>
<li>Disrupt: Chance to completely deflect an incoming magical attack. </li>
</ol>
<p>We discussed their root stats that increase these defences last time but I've summarised them here for your convenience:</p>

<li>Parry - Weapon Skill </li>
<li>Dodge - Initiative </li>
<li>Disrupt - Willpower </li>
</ol>
